In this talk, I focus on key aspects of the sharing economy, its ability to scale, shape the future of the economy and its potential to become a leading sustainable development strategy. In particular I will discuss my ongoing research projects including a study of the impact of the sharing economy on conventional businesses in terms of innovativeness and sustainability, my work with students exploring Millennials’ tendency to adopt alternatives to consumerism and move away from asset-heavy lifestyles, and a study of the opportunities for cities in adopting the co-creation model of Quirky, a crowd-sourced consumer product-development company.
